BMW IX Flow

The CES, short for Consumer Electronics Show, has always been a place to see the latest electronic gadgets and digital products. But this year, carmakers, specifically Electric Vehicles have taken much of the spotlight. Though many of the cars shown in the exhibition will remain as concepts, it gave us glimpses into what the future will look like for cars nonetheless.

For example, one of the surprises we had was the BMW IX Flow SUV that allows you to change the color of the car’s exterior from black to white, vice versa, using the E ink technology. Remember Viper, the TV series? Looks like we are not far off from that.

Another surprise we had was seeing more companies entering the EV market. So much so that the CES had turned into a car show instead. Chevy will be introducing an EV version of the Silverado; Sony is contemplating mass production of EVs; and with the prototype Mercedes Vision EQXX which has claimed to reach an astounding 612 miles (985km) on a single charge, the race for EV is getting more and more interesting.

As for the other specs, we really couldn’t care less. For one, Tesla, or shall I say Apple, has set the standard for much of the industrial designs in recent years. You are either minimalistic or others. And that was the tone set for most of the EVs’ interior designs. In this aspect, Mercedes differentiates itself by introducing cactus and mushroom fibers as interior materials. With ever-increasing attention to sustainability issues, we can foresee more companies following suit. As for the hardcore specs like mileage, motor, battery technology, etc., we believe car companies will continue to explore different methods, so the current outlook may not be the best representation of what the future might hold.

In summary, technology is advancing at a breakneck speed. Let’s just sit tight and enjoy the ride.
